The story behind Sable & Wander
Sable & Wander was born from a love of nature, wild places, old stories and the small details that make the world feel a little more magical.
Each collection is inspired by nature - its colours, creatures and the environments they belong to.
from the movement and mystery of the sea, to forests, open landscapes, changing skies and the folklore woven through the natural world, each collection explores a different atmosphere while remaining part of Sable & Wander.
The first of these collections is Thalassoria - the name given to the sea by the creatures who inhabit it. A place of hidden reefs, seahorses, Guardians and stories shaped by the tides.
Its creatures, encounters and lore are recorded in The Book of Thalassoria, my illustrated record of the discoveries, stories and ideas that bring the collection to life.
Over time, Sable & Wander will continue to grow through new collections inspired by land, sea, sky, forest, folklore and the natural worlds around them.
Through art and storytelling, I hope to capture some of the wonder found in those places - creating pieces that feel connected to nature while carrying a little imagination of their own.
About the artist
I’m Sarah-Jane, the artist and storyteller behind Sable & Wander.
My work is inspired by the beauty of nature, the creatures and landscapes within it, and the sense of mystery and quiet magic that can still be found in the world around us.
I’ve always been drawn to the little things - changing light across the water, unusual colour in the landscape, wildlife, weathered textures and those fleeting moments in nature that can make an ordinary walk feel like an adventure.
For me, creating art is a form of escapism. It is a chance to let the mind wander somewhere beyond the everyday and imagine what might exist just a little further out of sight.
That idea sits at the heart of Sable & Wander.
The name Sable & Wander brings together two parts of my creative life. Sable is inspired by the synthetic Sable brushes I work with, while Wander reflects my love of exploring nature, discovering new places and letting those experiences lead the imagination somewhere new.
Storytelling is an equally important part of my work.
The stories behind Sable & Wander sit somewhere between fantasy and fact - inspired by real creatures, habitats and the natural world, but intertwined with imagination, folklore and tales passed down through generations.
I love the idea that a real place or creature can be the beginning of something more: a character, a legend, a hidden history or an entire collection.
My creative process brings together drawing, digital techniques and carefully chosen creative tools, with each piece developed and refined by me before becoming part of a Sable & Wander collection.
Every print is then produced, checked, hand-signed and individually finished by me before it leaves Sable & Wander.
When i’m not creating, I’m happiest outdoors - going for walks, setting off on adventures, exploring somewhere new and simply being surrounded by nature.
I love that feeling of being completely present in a landscape and noticing all of its little magical moments.
Sable & Wander grew from that feeling.
A love of nature, imagination, storytelling and the freedom to let your mind wander.
