THALASSORIA
The Book of Thalassoria
For as long as I can remember, the sea has drawn my attention - not simply for its beauty, but for the quiet sense that something within it was waiting to be understood.
To us it is simply the Ocean - the tide, the water stretching endlessly toward the horizon. Yet beneath the shifting surface, within the forests of kelp and slow drifting gardens of coral, the sea has always carried another name.
It is not written upon any chart, nor spoken in the language of sailors, yet it moves through the currents all the same.
THALASSORIA.
It is not a hidden world nor a forgotten kingdom. It is the living sea itself - vast, ancient, and ever-changing - known and spoken of by those who have lived within the currents for millennia.
Within Thalassoria, countless creatures live - some fleeting, some ancient - all woven together by the pulse of the Ocean.
It is there the seahorses drift.
Small and delicate though they appear, they move through Thalassoria with enduring purpose - guardians of hidden places and travellers of currents rarely noticed by human eyes.

Chapter 2. The Book of THALASSORIA
Over time, my observations of the sea began to gather meaning.
The more I watched, the more it seemed that the seahorses of Thalassoria were not simply creatures of the Ocean, but bearers of stories carried within their colours, their forms, and the currents they travelled.
It was then that I began to record what I saw.
What began as scattered notes and small sketches gradually grew into a journal dedicated entirely to these observations - a record that would come to be known as The Book of THALASSORIA.
Within its pages I document the seahorses I encounter within the sea: their shapes, colours, movements, and the presence they seem to carry. As the record grew, certain patterns began to emerge.
Some seahorses appear as the first and most familiar inhabitants of Thalassoria - gentle drifters of reefs and seagrass meadows, moving through the tide as part of the sea’s everyday rhythm. These are recorded as the Standard Thalassorian Seahorse, the earliest and most commonly observed inhabitants within the book.
Others seem to carry a different presence entirely - watchful and enduring, as though entrusted with the care of particular places within the sea. These are known as the Guardian Seahorses, protectors of hidden coves, coral forests, and ancient currents that have moved through Thalassoria for generations.
There are also those whose colours and forms appear to shift with the turning of the seasons themselves.
Their hues echo the changing character of the sea - the soft renewal of spring waters, the brightness of summer tides, the deepening tones of autumn seas, and the quiet stillness of winter depths. These are recorded as the Seasonal Seahorses, whose presence seems to mirror the passage of time within Thalassoria.
Each seahorse recorded within the Book is given a name, and a place within the growing lore of the sea.
Some, though not all, are also given a title.
These titles are reserved for the Guardian Seahorses - those whose presence suggests a deeper responsibility within Thalassoria. They are protectors of reefs, coves, and ancient currents, entrusted with the care of places that have endured for generations.
The names themselves are not choses lightly. They arise from careful observation - from the colours carried within their forms, the movements they follow within the tide, and the character they appear to embody.
Over time it has become clear that each seahorse seems to reflect a different connection to the sea itself.
Some embody loyalty and devotion, remaining closely tied to the reefs and places they inhabit. Others reflect a gentle calm, drifting with the rhythm of the water. Some carry a sense of guardianship and resilience, protectors of hidden corners of Thalassoria.
In this way the names - and, where they appear, the titles - recorded within the book become more than simple descriptions. They become reflections of the qualities each seahorse appears to carry within the sea.
There is something else present within Thalassoria - a presence that seems to dwell within the sea itself.
Those who spend long enough observing the Ocean begin to sense it: an awareness carried through the vastness of the sea, as though the waters remember all that has passed through them.
The Ocean holds more than life alone. Within its depths linger traces of movement, fragments of stories, and echoes of creatures that have travelled its expanse long before our time.
Some speak of this presence simply as The Spirit of the Sea.
It is not something that can be seen, but rather something that can be felt - in the steady breathing of the Ocean, in the rise and fall of distant swells, and in those moments when the sea itself seems to pause and listen.
The seahorses of THALASSORIA appear to move in harmony with this presence.
They pass through reefs and seagrass meadows as though guided by something older than the waters themselves - guardians and wanderers alike, connected to the living memory of the sea.
It may be through this unseen spirit that the stories of Thalassoria endure, carried endlessly within the great and ancient body of the Ocean.
Chapter 3. The Spirit of the Sea
As the pages of the Book of THALASSORIA continued to grow, it became clear that words alone could not fully capture what I was observing.
Each seahorse recorded within the journal carries its own character - a combination of colour, form, and presence that seems to belong uniquely to the sea.
Over time I began to record these discoveries in another way.
through Illustration.
Using watercolour pencils, each seahorse is carefully drawn and brought to life through layers of colour, allowing its form and character to emerge gradually upon the page.
Each illustration is created as a reflection of the seahorses encountered within the pages of The Book of THALASSORIA - an attempt to preserve their form, their colour, and the meaning they appear to carry within the sea.
In this way the illustrations become an extension of the journal itself.
Each piece represents a seahorse that has been observed, named, and recorded - a small fragment of Thalassoria captured upon the page.
Through these drawings, the inhabitants of Thalassoria may be shared beyond the waters they inhabit, allowing others to glimpse the creatures and stories within the sea.
The seahorses recorded within the book may be explored below.
